Taxi driver charged with killing prostitutes
( 2003-12-22 21:37) (Agencies)

A 41-year-old taxi driver has been charged with the murders of five prostitutes and dismembering their bodies, Beijing police announced Monday.

Li Pingping was alleged to have engaged in transactions with prostitutes from local nightclubs and killed five women after having sex with them at his home earlier this year. Police found the dismembered bodies of the victims in a rubbish tip near Li's home.

Li is alleged to have stated that he murdered the women because prostitutes made money much easier than taxi drivers.

Police claim that Li's wife, whose surname is Dong, witnessed the crimes, but she failed to tell them and that she even helped in the murder of one of the victims.

Police described Li as introverted with few friends and interests, and alleged that he murdered a family of three in May 1995 and set a wealthy person's house on fire out of envy the same year.
