Workers detained for extreme acts ( 2003-12-15 16:30) (China Daily) Five workers who took drastic
action to demand their overdue pay have been taken into custody in Guangzhou,
reports New Express News.
Since last month, the workers had threatened to jump from cranes at
construction sites or bridges; and had knelt on major streets and in front of
government buildings to ask for unpaid salaries.
On November 22, a worker surnamed Tu climbed a 60-metre crane at a
construction site in Haizhu District, causing work to be suspended for more than
17 hours and a heavy traffic jam.
Local police said such acts disturb social order and the normal lives of
local residents; and urged workers go to court to protect their
rights.
