Real Madrid and AS Roma both maintained perfect home records at the weekend to remain top in Spain and Italy but Chelsea were deposed in the premier league after a first league defeat of the season at Stamford Bridge.

Real Madrid beat Deportivo Coruna 2-1 at the Bernabeu on Sunday to stay two points clear in the Primera Liga, Raul turning in a cross from Roberto Carlos for the winner five minutes from time.

Ronaldo had put Real ahead in the final minute of the first half but Deportivo hit back in the 63rd minute when Walter Pandiani scored within 15 seconds of coming on as a substitute.

Deportivo stay third, now six points behind the leaders, with Osasuna fourth on 27 points.

Barcelona and Espanyol set an unwanted red card record on Saturday, with both sides finishing with eight men in the Catalan derby which Barca won 3-1.

Referee Alfonso Pino Zamorano sent off Ivan de la Pena, Toni Soldevilla and Albert Lopo for home side Espanyol and Rafael Marquez, Ricardo Quaresma and Philip Cocu of Barcelona.

The previous record of five red cards for a first division match in Spain also featured Espanyol, against Real Mallorca in 1987.

CHELSEA BEATEN

English premier league big-spenders Chelsea surrendered top spot after slipping to their first home league defeat this term in a shock 2-1 reverse against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

Argentine striker Hernan Crespo glanced the home side in front but Bruno N'Gotty equalised and a last-minute own goal from John Terry gifted Bolton the points.

Defending champions Manchester United briefly rose to the summit after fit-again England midfielder Paul Scholes scored with two fine headers in the 3-1 defeat of local rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

But their lead at the top lasted less than 24 hours following Arsenal's 1-0 home success over Blackburn Rovers on Sunday, earned with an early strike from Dennis Bergkamp.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger later dismissed as "nonsense" weekend media speculation that striker Thierry Henry could be leaving Highbury for either Chelsea or Real Madrid.

An early penalty from Francesco Totti gave Roma a 1-0 win over Modena and helped them move three points clear of AC Milan at the top of Serie A.

Totti scored from the spot in the eighth minute after being tripped by defender Jacopo Balestri as Roma maintained their unblemished record at the Olympic Stadium this season.

European champions Milan, who have a game in hand, contested the World Club Cup in Yokohoma, Japan, on Sunday, losing 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out to Argentina's Boca Juniors following an absorbing 1-1 draw after extra time.

Champions Juventus sent out a warning to their title rivals with a 4-0 demolition of Parma in Turin. Juve maintained third place overall on 29 points, one behind Milan.

FIRST DEFEAT

In Germany, champions Bayern Munich handed VfB Stuttgart their first Bundesliga defeat of the season as Werder Bremen moved back to the top.

Dutch striker Roy Makaay hit a 75th minute winner for fourth-placed Bayern at the Olympic Stadium, exploiting a blunder by the Stuttgart defence to net with an angled effort.

"We had to win and we did," said Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, whose team have failed to shine this season and face a daunting task against Real Madrid in the first knockout stage of the Champions League early next year.

Stuttgart had gone 15 matches without defeat but dropped to second after Werder overcame Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 in a tense clash which saw both sides have a player sent off.

A double from Monaco's Croatian striker Dado Prso in a 2-0 win over Racing Strasbourg helped them increase their Ligue 1 lead to eight points, while Ajax Amsterdam regained top spot in the Dutch first division with a 1-0 home win against Utrecht.
