China hopes the capture of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein will help bring peace and stability to the middle eastern country, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman was quoted on Monday as saying.

"We hope that the latest development of the situation in Iraq is conducive to the Iraqi people taking their destiny into their own hands, and to realizing peace and stability in Iraq,"  spokesman Liu Jianchao said.

Iraq had suffered through wars and sanctions while Saddam was in power, Liu said.
