Steam still powers antique wagons ( 2003-12-12 17:10) (China Daily) Four old-fashioned,
steam-driven vehicles are still in operation in Beijing after 150 years on the
job, reports Beijing Morning Post.
The wagons, some 10 metres long and less than two metres wide, belonged to a
chemical plant run by the Shougang Group and are still used to carry raw
materials today.
According to a maintenance worker at the plant, the four vehicles were
produced in the last days of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Though not widely
known by the Chinese, the wagons have attracted more than 500 steam-powered
vehicle enthusiasts from North America, Europe and Japan wanting to have a look
at them.
