Fire protection departments believe a fire similar to the dormitory blaze at a university in Moscow last month would have killed just as many students here had it occurred at any of Guangzhou's universities, reports Southern Metropolis News.

A recent inspection campaign indicates that none of the university students in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, knowshow to use fire extinguishers.

Fire protection departments last week inspected Guangzhou-based Ji'nan University where many foreign students, including compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, are studying, as well as Guangzhou University, and found that no student could operate the fire extinguishers in the dormitories and classrooms.

And most of the emergency exits and entrances were locked to prevent theft.

A potential fire disaster looms over university students in Guangzhou, according to the fire protection departments.
