Family communication urged for children ( 2003-12-08 09:15) (Xinhua) Psychology experts have urged
parents to communicate their emotions with their children to help them develop a
healthy mind and character to avoid lapsing into autism.
The alert sounded the danger of the psychological disorder mainly affecting
children following a recent survey among 765 students in five primary and junior
schools in Guangzhou.
The survey of children¡¯s views of family education showed that more than 40
percent wanted their parents to have a sense of humor, more than 20 percent
would like to join their parents in games, Web surfing and other activities
while about 16 percent regarded chatting and communicating with parents as
favorite activities at home.
Experts said the survey reflected the loneliness of children in today¡¯s
society, where high-rises estrange children from one another.
Chinese children meet their peers and friends mostly at school and spend
their spare time alone at home. Their parents are often occupied by work and
other business and do not have enough time to share with their children.
Experts warned that children alienated from the community for long periods
were prone to autism, a condition most common among children. It is
characterized by self-absorption, which could cause them to grow into adults
indifferent to others¡¯ feelings and lacking a sense of community and social
responsibility.
