China pledges to make further contributions to UNIDO
( 2003-12-06 14:32) (Xinhua)

China stressed here on Friday that  it would continue its cooperation with the United Nations  Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and play an active  role in carrying out the organization's programs.

Speaking at UNIDO's 10th General Conference which ended Friday, Zhang Yan, the Chinese permanent representative to the United  Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, said the  series of forums and round table sessions held during the  conference had yielded suggestions and ideas beneficial to UNIDO's future development.

China will continue to work with other members countries on  programs agreed at the conference and make further contributions  to the organization, he said.

The Chinese delegation was pleased with the unanimous  endorsement of the resolution on promoting South-South cooperation, drafted by China and the Group of 77, Zhang said, adding that the  move showed all members of UNIDO support efforts aimed at  strengthening and deepening South-South cooperation.

More than 100 delegates attended the five-day conference of the UN agency established to relieve poverty by fostering industrial  growth. UNIDO has 117 member states and is represented in 35  countries.

Delegates focused on the function and future development of  UNIDO, on multilateral cooperation as well as trade and investment. The emergence of global terrorism and proliferation of weapons of  mass destruction were also discussed.

It was also decided at the conference that a forum on biology  will be held in Chile in 2004, and the Asia-Pacific branch of the  forum will be held this month in Chengdu, capital of southwest  China's Sichuan Province.
