Fireworks allowed for Lunar New Year ( 2003-12-04 17:06) (China Daily)
The prohibition of fireworks and firecrackers has been partly liberalized in
Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, reports Xinhua News Agency.
As approved by the provincial People's Congress, Xi'an citizens may set off
fireworks and firecrackers in specially designated areas during the first half
of the first month of the Lunar New Year holiday.
While the selling and lighting of fireworks and firecrackers to celebrate
Lunar New Year have all been forbidden in Xi'an in recent years, the policy
revision, which shows respect for the traditional folk customs of the Chinese,
is being welcomed by citizens.
