Shanghai sinking at a slower rate ( 2003-12-04 17:02) (China Daily) Shanghai is now sinking at a
rate of 10 millimetres a year compared with 110 millimetres in the past, as the
municipal government has been taking effective measures to stabilize the whole
city, Shanghai Morning Post reports.
Since 1921 subsidence has been a serious problem for Shanghai due to
over-exploitation of its groundwater reserves.
An annual quota limiting the amount of groundwater that can be used and
pumping water back underground to raise the city's level are some of the methods
being implemented.
