Beggars' incomes exceed minimum living standard ( 2003-12-03 17:16) (China Daily)
A survey indicates that the monthly per capita income of beggars in Beijing
exceeded 300 yuan (US$36), surpassing the capital city's minimum standard of
living amount of 290 yuan (US$35) per person per month, reports Beijing Evening
News.
The survey, conducted by seven Beijing City College students questioning 48
beggars on Beijing's busiest streets found that while all of them were migrants,
25 per cent were simply reluctant to work rather than having lost jobs or the
ability to earn a living normally.
Meanwhile, 33.3 per cent of the respondents hoped to find regular work, while
28.2 per cent did not intend to give up begging.
