Award for family protecting herons ( 2003-11-28 17:31) (China Daily)
A family has been awarded a prize for looking after herons in their village
for 35 years, Xinhua News Agency reports.
Shang Yufu, a farmer in the Kuancheng Man Autonomous County in Hebei
Province, took it upon himself to look after and protect the lives of eight
herons he discovered in his village in 1968.
And his son, Shang Heyu, succeeded him after his death. Under the Shang
family's care, the area's heron population has increased to nearly 2,000. The
Ford Automobile Co, hearing of the Shangs' long commitment to the protection of
the wild birds, rewarded the family's efforts with 50,000 yuan (US$6,000) this
month.
