City dwellers invest in farms ( 2003-11-25 17:13) (China Daily) More and more city dwellers
are investing in farms in the suburbs, Shanghai Morning Post reports.
Running a farm in the suburbs for profit and relaxation has become
fashionable. The city's agricultural administration hotline now receives
enquiries about establishing such farms on a daily basis.
Yuan Jiuyao, a retired worker, started operating a three-hectare fish pond in
Nanhui for 300,000 yuan (US$36,245), an investment he shares with two other
urbanites.
The pond has become a popular fishing spot for residents of downtown
Shanghai.
Similar "hobby" farms can be found in each district in the suburbs, according
to the agricultural authority.
