A routine car wash turned into a frightening experience for a couple whose new car was damaged when the machine malfunctioned while they sat inside the sedan, reports Beijing Star Daily.

Yu and his wife drove their brand new Volkswagen Passat into the car wash over the weekend. But the bar that shoots jets of water onto the vehicle suddenly hit and cracked the front window as the car continued to move forward on the conveyer belt.

In his panic, Yu jammed on the brakes to try to stop the car.

He told the paper that if they had kept moving forward, the machine would have washed him and his wife rather than the car.
