"Cat in the Hat" steals No. 1 at N. America box office ( 2003-11-24 15:30) (Xinhua) Universal Pictures' comedy "
The Cat in the Hat," loosely based on the children's book by Dr. Seuss, took the
No. 1 spot at the North American box office over the weekend, according to
studio estimates issued on Sunday.
The comedy, starring Mike Myers, took in US$40.1 million in its first
weekend. Its opening pales against that of the previous Dr. Seuss movie, "How
the Grinch Stole Christmas," which earned US$55.1 million in its 2000 release.
A low-budget thriller, "Gothika," released by Warner Bros. Pictures took the
No. 2 position by grossing US$19.6 million. The film starred the Oscar-winning
actress Halle Berry as a criminal psychologist who awakens one morning to find
herself incarcerated in her own psychiatric ward.
Last weekend's champ, the New Line Cinema's Christmas comedy " Elf," fell to
No. 3 with US$19.1 million in its third weekend. This brought to US$95.1 million
its gross in three weeks after its release.
The 20 Century Fox ocean epic "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the
World," starring Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe, slipped No. 4 with US$15.2
million in its second weekend, bringing its total to US$47.3 million in two
weeks.
Rounding up the Top Five was the romantic comedy "Love Actually, " starring
Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson, which took in US$9.1 million after expanding its
theater count. The Universal Pictures movie has earned US$30.8 million after
three weeks of release
