Permanent citizens to hit 17m ( 2003-11-18 17:31) (China Daily)
The number of permanent residents living in Shanghai is likely to reach 17
million by the end of 2003, according to the Municipal Population and Family
Planning Commission, www.eastday.com reports.
The estimated population count is being publicized as part of an initiative
to encourage citizens to participate in family planning and comprehensive
population control.
Around 86,000 babies will have been born by the end of the year, registering
a natural growth rate of minus one one-thousandth.
In 2006, the city will see an upsurge in the number of newborns, similar to
the city second baby boom that took place in the 1980s.
