Philippine business woman killed in spoiled kidnap attempt
( 2003-11-18 16:36) (Xinhua)

A local executive officer of the Coca-Cola Export Company was found dead alongside a coastal road in Manila early Tuesday after a suspected spoiled kidnap, the ABS-CBN on-line news said by quoting the police.

The body of Betty Sy, who was abducted Monday by unidentified men, was wrapped in a blanket and a trash bag, the police said, adding that the victim was a Chinese-Filipino.

Police said she had been shot twice in the right leg, and that bloodstains were found in her abandoned sports utility vehicle.

Chinese Filipino community leader Teresita See, who leads an anti-kidnap watchdog group, expressed concern Tuesday over the rise in kidnappings this year, most of the victims being from her ethnic group.

See said the ethnic Chinese community members have banded together to form support groups, giving advice to families of kidnap victims and helping them drive down the ransom. Kidnappings are being cited by businessmen as well as diplomats as a key factor deterring foreign investment here.
