ID-checking system blocks bad blood ( 2003-11-12 17:31) (China Daily) A computerized identity card
checking system has been introduced at 12 local blood collection centres and 19
medical clinics to prevent blood sellers from making illegal profits, Shanghai
Morning Post reports.
The system was purchased from the public security bureau, according to
officials of the Shanghai Blood Administration Office.
While the city encourages voluntary blood donation, it still imposes quotas
on companies to guarantee a sufficient blood supply.
As some employees are unwilling to donate blood, some employers or staffers
hire "professional" blood dealers or sellers to give blood in their place to
fulfil the company's quota.
Many blood dealers and sellers use counterfeit ID cards when selling
blood.
