Missing crew found in good state in Hainan ( 2003-11-11 23:08) (Xinhua) The missing crew from a
competing boat have been found in good condition Tuesday after they lost contact
with the headquarters at the Circum-Hainan Island international sailing event,
the Chinese organizers said.
"The eight crew are in good state when we found them," said an official of
the Hainan Salvage at Sea Center.
The eight missing sailors, all from the boat "Freedom Fire", met with stormy
waves about three meters high off Basuo harbor of Hainan Island, in the very
south of China, Monday night when they started off with other four boats eleven
hours later, according to the Center. "Chinese Number One" and "Spring Breeze"
have reached the Basuo harbor in the morning safe and sound while the damaged "J
24" is being dragged to the Sanya harbor for repair. Another boat Pole was on
its way to Basuo harbor.
As all the competing boats have suffered damages, the competition was called
off.
The Freedom Fire from Hong Kong, winner of the just-concluded Hong Kong-Sanya
international sailing tournament, entered the five- day regatta with other four
boats.
The three-phase competition attracted 50 sailors from Australia, Canada,
England, Hong Kong of China, Macao of China, the Philippines as well as host
China at ages ranging from 25 to 70.
