Trade union honors Shenzhou-5 staff
( 2003-11-10 20:55) (Xinhua)

The All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) on Monday honored institutions and individuals who had made great contributions to China's first manned space flight.

Nine institutions were awarded the May Day Certificate, including four institutions under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, and two research institutes of the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation.

Nine individuals earned May Day Medals, including Wu Yansheng, president of the China Carrier Rocket Technology Research Institute, Zhang Bainan, deputy chief designer of the Shenzhou-5 spacecraft, and Xiao Houde, deputy director for the carrier rocket research for the manned space mission.

May Day Certificates and Medals are granted by the ACFTU to institutions and individuals for their outstanding performance as representatives of China's working class.

Since the successful space flight of Shenzhou-1 in 1999, the ACFTU has awarded May Day Certificates to 21 groups and May Day Medals to 25 individuals for their contributions to the Shenzhou space flight program.
