Chinese film wins Tokyo film festival top honor

The 16th Tokyo International Film Festival ended its nine-day run Sunday, with the highest honor awarded to a Chinese film featuring a Japanese performer who won the Best Actor prize.

Chinese director Huo Jianqi's film "Nuan", adapted from a short story about the yearnings of first love and ironies of fate by author Mo Yan, beat 14 others to win the Tokyo Grand Prix.

Veteran Japanese actor Teruyuki Kagawa won the Best Actor award for his performance in the film. Two female performers shared the Best Actress award -- Shinobu Terajima for her role in "Vibrator" and Kristy Jean Hulslander for her performance in "Santa Smokes".

The "Santa Smokes" co-directors shared the prize for best director. "The Suit", directed by Bakhtiyar Khudoinazarov, took the Special Jury Prize, the festival's second-highest honor.

It also bagged the Best Artistic Contribution award.The film tells the story of three teenagers in a small Russian town who, seeking to escape their dreary life, buy a designer suit and find their lives changed in unexpected ways.

Established in 1985, the Tokyo International Film Festival has showcased many films from abroad and a number of Hollywood celebrities.

The film festival, held annually since 1991, took place mainly at the Bunkamura arts center in Tokyo's Shibuya entertainment district.
