Special equipment weighs the overloaded ( 2003-11-06 17:54) (China Daily)
The local road authority will begin installing special weighing equipment on
13 major roads linking Shanghai with neighbouring cities to crack down on
overloaded vehicles, Jiefang Daily reports.
The project, to be completed on November 25, is aimed at protecting local
roads from damage caused by overloaded vehicles from outside the city.
More than 40 per cent of Shanghai's existing roads suffer severe damage on
top of the usual wear and tear they are designed to endure.
As a result, the city spends some 2 billion yuan (US$241.6 million) every
year on road repairs.
