More young women are lighting up

The number of women among the city's 16 million smokers is rising, according
to the Social Medical and Health Management Research Centre, Shanghai Morning
Post reports.
Most women smokers in Shanghai are between 25 and 45 and began to smoke
around the age of 27.
Many young women view smoking as fashionable and part of a modern lifestyle,
considering it a sign of emancipation.
A desire to be "part of the crowd" also seems to influence a woman's decision
to take up smoking.
