A 13-year-old boy from Changde in Hunan Province hanged himself at home on Monday morning, reports Sanxiang Metropolis News.

Liu, who attended Linyuan Elementary School, left behind a letter for his school leaders in which he said the meals in the dining hall were terrible and he planned to sacrifice himself on behalf of his schoolmates.

Sources from Liu's school, however, said the reason for Liu's death was not so simple.

Liu and 12 other students were caught stealing from a school shop recently.

They had been ordered to write self-criticisms and make compensation for the pilfered goods.

Liu had been scolded by one of his teachers the day before his death.

Liu's parents ask for a further investigation into their son's death.
