City starts preservation study ( 2003-10-29 17:15) (China Daily)
Shanghai will launch a thorough investigation to ensure the protection of the
city's heretofore "unrecognized" historic buildings, reports Shanghai Evening
Post.
The city currently lists 398 "authorized" buildings of historical value,
while 11 areas come under municipal protection.
However, Tongji University estimates that there are anywhere from 10,000 to
20,000 sites of historical interest in the city.
The Shanghai Urban Planning Administration Bureau and the Shanghai Commission
of Cultural Relics Management will join forces to investigate the
matter.
