Voltage surge damages appliances

Electrical appliances at nearly 300 households in a residential section of
the Haidian District were damaged due to a sudden surge in voltage on Monday
evening, reports Beijing Morning Post.
Area residents told the paper that at around 7:20 pm, their lamps suddenly
brightened and smoke began curling out from their television sets, computers and
other home appliances. Several seconds later, the power was cut off.
Power department workers were dispatched to the area for repairs, but the
cause of the sudden surge is still unclear.
