Fees to ease traffic jams? ( 2003-10-24 17:09) (China Daily) Local transportation officials
are considering new measures, such as levying a "traffic jam fee" and raising
parking charges, to ease increasing congestion on local roads, reports Shanghai
Morning Post.
Charges would be levied on drivers wanting to enter the downtown area in an
effort to control the number of vehicles on the city's busiest roads.
Officials also said they plan to erect more electronic road signs to keep
drivers informed of the latest traffic situations to reduce bottlenecks. And
more one-way lanes will be added to the current 457 such roads to help traffic
run more smoothly.
