Utah Jazz beat the N.Y. Knicks, 77-60
( 2003-10-24 11:15) (Agencies)

The Utah Jazz provided further proof of how the NBA preseason can produce strange results, defeating the New York Knicks 77-60 Thursday night to improve their record to 6-1.

Led by DeShawn Stevenson's 12 points, all 14 players in uniform scored for the Jazz ¡ª expected to be among the league's worst teams following the departure of John Stockton and Karl Malone.

"I don't think anybody's going to get too excited about us being 6-1. We've got a lot of basketball to learn how to play," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "I think our guys enjoyed New York more last night than they did getting ready to play. Maybe they were watching the baseball game."

The Knicks, playing without starters Charlie Ward (hyperextended right elbow) and Keith Van Horn (strained groin), shot just 18 percent in the first half and were outscored 28-12 in the fourth quarter.

Rookie Matt Carroll, trying to make the Knicks despite the team's lack of roster space, shot 2-for-7 and scored seven points to finish the preseason with a scoring average of 7.0.

The Knicks are carrying 16 players with guaranteed contracts, and they'd have to get rid of two of them in order to make room for the shooting guard from Notre Dame. Among New York's players who could be expendable are rookie center Slavko Vranes, veteran center Travis Knight and backup power forward Othella Harrington.

"Coming into camp he was very much aware of the contract situation," Knicks coach Don Chaney said, "In my opinion he's played well enough to be on the team, but right now unless we resolve the contract situation it'll be very difficult to place him. But I think he has enough talent to make an NBA team."
