A boatman surnamed Li and "Ah Huang", his neighbour's dog bit each other on Sunday night after the animal failed to recognize the drunken man, Shanghai Evening Post reports. Li ended up beating the pet dog to death.

Li and Zhou, the dog's owner, went to their local police station the next morning and asked officers to settle the dispute. Li wanted Zhou to pay his medical expenses for treating Ah Huang's bites on his finger and face. Li said he had only been playing with the dog as usual when it attacked him.

Zhou agreed that the dog was normally very docile with Li. However, he argued, Li was so drunk that night that the dog did not recognize him for the overpowering smell of alcohol.

Zhou also chastised Li for beating Ah Huang to death.
