Chinese women weightlifting aims for four tickets for Athens Olympics ( 2003-10-21 22:00) (Xinhua)
Chinese women's weightlifting team must secure four berths for the 2004
Athens Olympic Games, said Chinese national coach Li Shunzhu at the 5th Chinese
City Games Tuesday.
Li, who took the position of Chinese national team coach in 2002, said that
his team will fight to secure their tickets through the World Championships next
month.
He has drawn up a 13-member list for the 2003 World Championships, from which
only seven lucky ones could make their trip to Vancouver, Canada.
Women's weightlifting made its debut at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, and
the rule stipulated that a country or region can only take part in no more than
four categories.
Chinese strongwomen, with overwhelming power in the world, collected four
golds from as many divisions they took part in the Sydney Olympics.
However, Li said that Chinese team could face certain challenge in Athens,
"as many countries and regions have been making efforts to develope the sport
after it became an official program in Olympics."
