Tennis: Henin-Hardenne takes top tennis ranking ( 2003-10-21 16:26) (Agencies)
Justine Henin-Hardenne overtook Kim Clijsters for the No. 1 ranking in women's tennis Monday, but the two will exchange positions again in a week.
Among the men, Juan Carlos Ferrero was officially installed as No. 1 in the ATP Champions Race, with Andy Roddick dropping to second.
Henin-Hardenne was assured the top spot after winning the Swisscom Challenge on Sunday.
The WTA Tour released its official rankings with the two Belgians ¡ª Henin-Hardenne and Clijsters ¡ª at Nos. 1 and 2. Henin-Hardenne has 6,667 points and Clijsters 6,584.
They are followed by four Americans: Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati and Venus Williams. Completing the top 10 are Amelie Mauresmo, Elena Dementieva, Anastasia Myskina and Chanda Rubin.
Clijsters was No. 1 for 10 weeks. The tour said she will regain the top spot in a week because Henin-Hardenne has withdrawn from an upcoming tournament in Austria and will lose computer points.
Henin-Hardenne is the 13th woman to be No. 1 since the tour rankings were introduced in 1975.
Ferrero became No. 1 in the Champions Race by winning the Madrid Masters on Sunday. The Spaniard already was No. 1 in the entry system rankings, which reflect the past 52 weeks and are used to determine tournament seedings.
The season-long Champions Race is based on the four majors, the nine Tennis Masters Series events and a player's other top results.
Ferrero has 826 points and Roddick 822 in the Champions Race. Roger Federer, Andre Agassi and Guillermo Coria complete the top five. They are followed by Rainer Schuettler, Carlos Moya, David Nalbandian, Mark Philippoussis and Sebastien Grosjean.
