Rookie Jarvis Hayes scored 29 points, leading the Washington Wizards to a 99-86 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night in an exhibition game.
Hayes, the 10th overall pick out of Georgia, scored on a variety of mid-range jumpers and drives to the basket to top his previous preseason high by 17 points. He also added six rebounds and two steals.
Gilbert Arenas added 13 points and seven assists and Juan Dixon scored 12 for the Wizards, who shot 50 percent.
Dion Glover had 19 points and Stephen Jackson added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks, who committed 21 turnovers. Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 11 points and five rebounds in 26 minutes in his second game since returning from back surgery.
Washington guard Larry Hughes missed his second straight game with a sore left Achilles' tendon. Hawks forward Alan Henderson did not travel with the team and has yet to play in the preseason due to a sore back.
Before the game coach Terry Stotts said it's possible Henderson could return this week.
A crowd of 8,569 watched the first NBA game in Charlotte since May 2002, when the then-Charlotte Hornets lost to New Jersey in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The NBA returns to Charlotte next season when the expansion Bobcats begin play.
