NBA: Mavericks rally to beat Spurs 89-84 ( 2003-10-20 16:49) (Agencies)
Josh Howard scored 17 points, and the Dallas Mavericks overcame a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the San Antonio Spurs 89-84 Sunday night in a preseason game.
Hedo Turkoglu made two free throws to give San Antonio an 82-65 lead with 7:49 to play before Dallas (3-3) closed the game with a 24-2 run.
Eduardo Najera made two free throws with 1:48 left to put the Mavericks up 83-82, their first lead since early in the third quarter. They never trailed again.
A dunk by Sean Marks with 1:15 to play brought San Antonio (3-3) within 85-84, before Danny Fortson and Marquis Daniels each made a basket for Dallas to seal the win.
Dallas, which snapped a two-game losing streak, had four players in double figures. Steve Nash scored 13 points, Fortson added 12 and Travis Best 10.
Manu Ginobili had 23 points to lead San Antonio, which eliminated Dallas in the Western Conference finals last season. Tim Duncan scored 15 and Turkoglu added 10. Duncan also had 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the preseason.
Fortson had all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter as Dallas connected on 11 of 19 field-goal attempts. San Antonio, playing mostly its reserves, was 5-for-17.
San Antonio seemed to take control of the game when they closed out the third quarter with a 13-0 run to take a 71-59 lead. Ginobili had 12 points in the quarter to lead the way for San Antonio.
Spurs point guard Tony Parker missed the game because of a sprained left ankle. Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki sat out with a sprained right ankle.
