Public urged to report 'gift recycling' ( 2003-10-17 15:47) (China Daily)
The public is being urged to report "gift recycling" stores, which function
as money-laundering channels for corrupt officials, to an anti-graft hotline,
reports Guangzhou Daily.
Such stores procure cigarettes, pricey alcoholic beverages and other
expensive products at deep discounts, targeting officials who cannot possibly
consume the many such gifts they receive in their official positions.
"Gift recycling" is illegal and stores offering the service should face harsh
punishment, according to a recent proposal submitted by municipal congress
deputies.
