Li Yushu, former vice-mayor of Leshan in southwest China's Sichuan Province, was executed Tuesday after being convicted of abusing his authority to take bribes valued at 8.9 million yuan (1.1 million US dollars).

Li was accused of illegally accepting the cash from 1996 to 2001 by abusing his power and position as vice-mayor, the head of the communications bureau, the head of a communications development company, and the chief of construction of a bridge in Leshan.

At an intermediate people's court in early 2002, Li was sentenced to death and deprived of political rights for life, and had his assets confiscated.

Li appealed the decision to the provincial higher people's court, which rejected the appeal and upheld the ruling, and reported the case to the supreme people's court for approval.
