Fifth flood crest on Weihe River arrives at Weinan
( 2003-10-04 10:24) (Xinhua)

Weinan City in northwest China's Shaanxi Province is reinforcing the embankments along the Weihe River as the river's fifth flood crest arrived at the city on Friday.

Since September 27, continuous rainstorms have hit Shaanxi and the water level at the lower reaches of the Weihe River rose quickly over the past few days.

Around 19:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon, the water flow volume at the Lintong Hydrological Station increased to 2,510 cubic meters per second from 700 cubic meters per second a few days earlier. The temporary embankment on the Weihe River, which has been hit by floods for over a month, was severely tested.

The provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters have sent an urgent notice to the governments in the area under flood threat to watch the flood situation and station more patrols on embankments.

Since late August, the Weihe River, the largest branch of the Yellow River, China's second largest, has seen the largest flooding in 20 years. More than 300,000 people were evacuated and over 200 square kilometers of land was submerged.
