Giant straw hat is gift for Buddha ( 2003-09-30 13:02) (China Daily) A giant straw hat measuring
six metres in diameter and 1.2 metres high, large enough to keep the sun off a
famous Buddha statue, was finished by craftsmen in Bohe Town in Longquan,
Sichuan Province last Wednesday, reports Tianfu Morning Post.
For 300 years, Bohe Town has been home to makers of high quality straw hats
that are popular both in China and the rest of the world.
The huge hat, designed for a festival to be held during the National Day
holiday, took 16 craftsmen two months to finish.
About 8,800 metres of straw roping were used to make the hat, which is
supported by a steel frame.
Xi Jing, the town's deputy chief, said Bohe would present the hat to the
well-known Leshan Buddha statue as a gift, as well as apply for a Guiness World
Record.
