Endangered dolphin on display ( 2003-09-30 12:53) (China Daily) The body of a specially
preserved Yangtze River Dolphin is on display at the Shanghai Zoo to raise
public awareness about the importance of protecting this rare species, which is
on the brink of extinction, Shanghai Evening Post reports.
The elderly female dolphin, measuring 2.26 metres and weighing 100 kilograms,
was found beached on Chongming Island on February 18, 1998.
She eventually died of exhaustion and severe dehydration on March 1 despite
the dedicated rescue efforts of the Shanghai Fisheries Superintendence
Administration and related departments.
The Baiji dolphin is one of 12 rare animals in the world facing extinction.
There are now fewer than 100 such dolphins, experts said.
