Cardiovascular hospital opens in Tianjian
( 2003-09-28 11:50) (chinadaily.com.cn)

A large-scale cardiovascular hospital opened Friday in the Tianjin Economic Development Area (TEDA) in North China's Tianjian Municipality.

Liu Xiaocheng briefs the media on the hospital.

The opening ceremony for the TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital -- the largest in Asia -- gathered many officials from the central government, Tianjin Municipality and other provinces and hundreds of medical experts from China and around the world. Vice-Premier Wu Yi sent a congratulatory letter for the event.

Liu Xiaocheng, hospital president and a renowned heart surgeon, said he aimed to provide not-so-expensive and quality medical services for cardiovascular patients.

Investment for the first phase of the medical research building tops 730 million yuan, Liu said.

The hospital, which is established by the TEDA, covers an area of 700 million square meters and has 600 beds, 16 operating rooms and six heart catheterization labs, 80 ICU beds and 40 CCU beds. It is designed to operate 10,000 surgeries every year. Treatments will be offered to patients locally, nationally and internationally.

Apart from treatment, the hospital will also provide teaching, research and rehabilitation.

In China, about 13,000 people die every day due to heart disease. Another four million are in need of heart surgery, according to Liu.

Cardio specialists and senior management were recruited from worldwide, making the hospital truly an international cardio facility.

The hospital's diagnoses, cures and scientific research equipment are world-class, including dual-gradient nuclear and magnetic sympathetic vibration; 16-row CT; the third EBT in the world (new electric bundle CT, the other two are in the US); ECT; flat-plate type digital shadow-reducing heart catheter machine; three-dimensional, the first automatic medicine-installing machine in China and a high-power electric microscope.

The TEDA is one of the first national economic development areas designated by the Central Government. Since its establishment in 1985, nearly 3,700 international corporations, including Toyota, Motorola, Nestle and Yamaha, have invested US$18 billion in the burgeoning area.
