Moderate quake hits China's eastern sea, no damage

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck an area under the East China Sea on Sunday, about 500 km (300 miles) off China's coast, but there were no reports of damage, an official said.

"The epicentre was located about 500 km from the Zhejiang coast, so there's no possibility of any damage or casualties. None have been reported so far," a spokesman for the State Seismological Bureau said.

Zhejiang is a prosperous Chinese coastal province. The quake hit at 6 In February, an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck the western region of Xinjiang, killing nearly 300 people and injuring more than 4,000.
