Supermarket pays for death of sale victim ( 2003-09-24 14:31) (China Daily)
A supermarket has been ordered to pay 48,700 yuan (US$5,867) to the family of
a 77-year-old woman who was trampled to death in a sales frenzy, reports
Guangzhou Daily.
The supermarket in Jiangmen offered deep discounts for products at an
anniversary sale on January 11 - 68-yuan (US$8) electric rice cookers sold for 8
yuan (US$1) and 2,199-yuan (US$265) TV sets were priced at 698 yuan (US$84).
Thousands of shoppers tried to squeeze into the supermarket when it opened at
8:30 am. Ou, the victim, fell to the ground and sustained serious injuries in
the crush. She later died in hospital. The sale was cancelled after several more
accidents and injuries occurred before 10 am.
The court has ordered the supermarket to compensate the woman's family for
her death, saying it did not take adequate measures to ensure customers'
safety.
