Granny seeks successor to feed cats ( 2003-09-24 14:14) (China Daily)
A 79-year-old woman who has been feeding the stray cats at a neighbourhood
park for 19 years is looking for a volunteer to succeed her, Beijing Morning
Post reports.
Armed with a bag of food and a bottle of fresh water, the warm-hearted
elderly woman makes her way to the white pagoda in Beihai Park daily without
fail.
Dozens of stray cats surround her, eagerly feasting on a variety of items
that could include watermelon, fish heads, bread or chicken.
For 19 years, the woman has been providing the cats with two meals a day,
even on her 79th birthday. Although the money she spends on their food consumes
a large part of her 700-yuan (US$84) pension, and she frequently goes without
meals herself, she says she has no regrets.
However, as her health deteriorates, she worries about the cats' future and
hopes to find a successor.
