( 2003-09-24 10:59) (Xinhua)

chairman of British American Tobacco in China, has been appointed a consultant to the government of Southwest China¡¯s Yunnan Province.

He will serve a five-year term as one of 53 foreigners from 16 countries and regions appointed as consultants Monday by the provincial government.

They will serve as government consultants on economic and social development. As the province¡¯s closest investment and cooperating partners, they will introduce Yunnan to the world to attract more overseas investment and advise the government on a range of matters.

Most of the consultants are heads of well-known multinationals, such as Chief Executive of Nescafe (China) Josef M. Mueller and President of Siemens China Ernst H. Behrens.

The government would attach great importance to the consultants¡¯ advice and put it into practice as soon as possible, said Xu Rongkai, governor of the province.
