Huge gas reserve found in SW China ( 2003-09-23 14:50) (Xinhua)
One of China's largest oil and gas developers Shengli Oilfield Co. declared
recently that its drill team had found a huge gas reserve in the Sichuan
province, southwest China, with a total expected storage of more than 100
billion cubic meters.
Sichuan is one of the most gas-rich provinces in souwestern China, and the
country is stepping up its efforts to find more energy reserves to carry out its
strategy of pipelining gas or oil to the energy-dearth east, where a booming
economy is demanding more power supply.
The gas reserve, covering an area of 3,600 square meters underground in
Bazhong city in the province's northeast, is estimated between 110 and 150
billion cubic meters.
According to the company, gas was found at 4,484 meters deep in the Heba No.
1 Drilling Well. The well has four designed layers to be drilled for search of
gas and the finding in the first layer suggested that huge reserves will be very
likely in the deeper layers.
The find has paved the way for a full exploitation of gas reserves in the
region, the company said.
