Workshop to help crisis counselling
( 2003-09-23 11:48) (China Daily)

The World Health Organization (WHO) opened a workshop in Shenzhen on Thursday to train counsellors to help people cope psychologically during major crises.

The workshop is part of a joint programme run by WHO and the China Disease Control Centre to establish a psychological crisis intervention network.

Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu in Sichuan Province, Changsha in Hunan Province and Shenzhen have been chosen in the pilot programme, reports Guangzhou Daily.

Shenzhen citizens displayed an acute need for psychological counselling during the SARS outbreak, said Hu Jize, director of Shenzhen Kangning Hospital. About 60 to 70 per cent of patients visiting the psychiatric hospital during the period complained of SARS-related anxiety and distress.
