Ugandan doctor wins international award for fighting AIDS ( 2003-09-22 16:36) (Agencies)
Dr. Peter Mugyenyi, director of the Joint Clinical Research Center (JCRC) in
Uganda has won an international award for playing key role in the fight against
HIV/ AIDS, reported The New Vision newspaper on Monday.
Mugyenyi was among six people from around the world who received the
"Honoring Our Heroes 2003" award in Chicago, USA last week.
The award was given by the International Association of Physicians in AIDS
Care (IAPAC).
United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa Steven Lewis was among
them. Mugyenyi was honoured for extensive research on AIDS treatment,
vaccines and efforts to make treatment available.
"In 1992 he (mugyenyi) spearheaded the first vaccine trial on the African
continent. JCRC treats the majority of the small population of Ugandans
currently on anti-retroviral therapy,"
