Union reps to vote on new leaders ( 2003-09-22 10:16) (China Daily)
China's premier trade union body will elect new leaders during a five-day congress that starts today in Beijing. The 14th National Congress of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) will hear and examine the work report of its 13th Executive Committee. It will discuss and adopt an amended version of the federation's constitution and financial report of the 13th Executive Committee, and elect the 14th ACFTU Executive Committee and the Financial Auditing Committee. The 36 delegations to the congress consist of 1,698 official representatives from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. They consist of unionists in public institutions, managers of companies and researchers in scientific institutions as well as workers in factories. Of the total, 493 or 29 per cent of representatives are women. More than 94 per cent of representatives (1,598) have received higher education. The ACFTU has also invited another 253 representatives, including 34 from Hong Kong and Macao. A survey shows the public's top three trade union concerns are how the Trade Union Law is implemented, how trade unions can play a more positive role and how to protect employees' rights and interests.
