As of 6 p.m. Saturday, the Qingdao Port in east China's Shandong Province had
handled 100.05 million tons of cargo, up 14 percent over the corresponding
period of last year.
Meanwhile, the number of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers
through the port totaled 3 million, a rise of 26 percent year on year, according
to statistics from the port administration.
To increase its handling capacity, Qingdao port has, over the past decade and
more, expanded a century-old port area and built two modern port areas with
advanced port facilities. The port now boasts China's largest wharves for
containers, crude oil, iron ore and wharves for coal and grain, of world level.
The handling capacity of the port mounted to 122 million tons last year,
compared with the former 20 million tons annually. The number of TEUs of
containers handled last year reached 3.41 million, compared with more than
20,000 in the past, ranking second in the Northeast Asia region and 14th in the
world.
