Swindlers target new university students ( 2003-09-18 14:00) (China Daily)
Swindlers have been targeting women students as they arrive at the railway
station in Nanning in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, reports Xinhua.
As Huang was waiting for a bus after walking out of Nanning Railway Station
on the afternoon of August 21, two young men, claiming to be Hunan Normal
University students, said they had just been robbed and had no money to return
home.
After the sympathetic woman gave them 800 yuan (US$96), the two invented more
excuses for needing money, including telephone calls, meals to appease their
empty stomachs and air tickets, until she had handed over all of the 4,300 yuan
(US$520) she had borrowed to pay her tuition fees.
In a separate case, a man who claimed he could buy a cheaper train ticket
through some connections walked away with 300 yuan (US$36) from another
student.
