140,000 yuan for falling-pot injury ( 2003-09-17 16:53) (China Daily) A court in Chongqing
Municipality has ordered 50 households in an apartment building to jointly pay a
140,000-yuan (US$17,000) compensation award to a passer-by who was gravely
injured by a falling flowerpot, reports Xinhua.
Jiang Xiangfa was struck on the head by a two-kilogram flowerpot on September
27, 2001, as he walked past the high-rise Wenhua Building. He was hospitalized
for three years with a serious brain injury at a cost of 70,000 yuan (US$8,500).
Police never figured out from which flat the pot fell.
The court ruled out seven of the 57 flats in the building but declared that
the rest must pay 2,950 yuan (US$356) each to compensate for the victim's
medical expenses and for being left disabled for the rest of his life.
